Mount Prospect District 57 school board President Joseph Leane confirmed today that transportation supervisor Vincente Ramirez has been placed on administrative leave while the district investigates his actions leading to the March 9 DUI arrest of bus driver Betty Burden.
New details emerged at a special school board meeting Monday night that a co-worker brought concerns about Burden possibly drinking on the job to Ramirez the day before her arrest.

The next day, another driver told Ramirez that Burden smelled of alcohol. According to school officials and police, Ramirez tracked down Burden on her route and boarded the bus to try to ascertain if Burden was impaired. But rather than pull her off the bus, Ramirez allowed Burden to continue to drop off students from Lions Park School, but followed her and called police.

Burden is charged with felony DUI after police said her blood-alcohol content registered at nearly three times the 0.08 legal limit...

A coalition of reform-minded Chicago groups today launched a new government accountability Web site it hopes will educate voters in advance of next year's city elections.

Developing Government Accountability to the People debuted its new site the same day it issued its second city government report card, giving Chicago an overall grade of D.

The organization issued a similarly poor report card four years ago, prior to the 2007 election that brought some new faces to a City Council still largely controlled by Mayor Richard Daley.

A federal judge has refused to dismiss a defamation lawsuit filed against Oprah Winfrey by the former headmistress of Winfrey's girls school in South Africa.
 
Judge Eduardo Robreno, in a ruling Monday, said former headmistress Nomvuyo Mzamane  has enough evidence to pursue claims that Winfrey defamed her. The talk show host made the remarks in 2007 after sex-abuse complaints surfaced at her school for poor girls near Johannesburg.
A dorm matron who worked under Mzamane was charged with abusing students.

Mzamane accused Winfrey of suggesting she was not trustworthy by talking about the need for new leadership and remarks such as, "I thought she cared about the girls of South Africa," according to the October 2008 lawsuit.
 
Winfrey's lawyers argued the remarks, made at an Oct. 20, 2007 meeting with parents and at a Nov. 5, 2007 press conference, reflected Winfrey's opinions.

Photos and videos depicting the death of a SeaWorld Orlando trainer killed by a whale will remain out of the public eye -- for now.

At the request of the family of trainer Dawn Brancheau -- an Indiana native -- Circuit Judge Lawrence Kirkwood on Monday issued a temporary restraining order against the Medical Examiner's Office and the Orange County Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office is investigating Brancheau's death Feb. 24 at the theme park.
Brancheau's husband, Scott Brancheau, wrote in an affidavit that release of images "which graphically depict the circumstances of the death of my wife ... will cause me untold anguish, grief and pain."

At issue are photographs taken by Orange County deputies and SeaWorld video that park officials turned over to the Sheriff's Office after the orca grabbed Brancheau by her ponytail, pulled her into the water and then drowned her.

That enhanced Game of the Year-branded re-release of Batman: Arkham Asylum is also coming to North America, publishers Square Enix and Warner Bros confirmed today.

As with the European edition, the North American re-release sees TriOviz 3D support added to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions, with the retail package including the 3D glasses required to take advantage of said support.

However, the North American version differs from the European release in at least one regard, as the European edition packs six previously downloadable challenge maps on the map disc, while the North America edition only packs four.

Wheaton's coyote cull has been suspended to see whether the trapping of four of the animals reduces reports of complaints from residents on the city's south side.

Last week, a DeKalb contractor hired by the city trapped and destroyed the coyotes, and a fifth coyote was recently struck and killed by a car, city officials reported at the Wheaton City Council meeting Monday night. State law does not allow the relocation of coyotes, so any trapped animal must be destroyed.

Wheaton decided to cull the animals after some residents who live around the Chicago Golf Club reported attacks on pets and aggressive behavior by coyotes.

City Manager Don Rose said the stoppage was intended.

"It was always part of the plan to do some initial trapping and then sit back and see what happened," he said.

After years of delays, Ubisoft is finally gearing up to release Splinter Cell: Conviction on PC and Xbox 360 during the week of April 15.

And to help prove that the stealth-action sequel is actually coming out this time, the company has revealed that a downloadable demo is slated to hit Xbox 360 this Thursday, March 18.
